On September 8th 2008, the first annual Creative 30 competition is an opportunity for burgeoning UK creative talent to gain national recognition and potentially win £10,000. Or a Volvo.
The first fifteen nominees for Creative 30 - a joint venture between VICE, Volvo and The Independent - have been selected by a board of "creative icons" including Mystery Jets' Blaine Harrison, Martin Creed, Vivienne Westwood, Wiley and Gavin Watson. Volvo's Simon Lamarre had this to say:
"Today's mass media exposes us to mediocrity on a daily basis. Many people seek attention and instantaneous fame without having anything to contribute. The challenges we face as a society today demand intelligent and creative solutions. To be creative, one must dare to fail whilst trying new ideas. So truly creative people need all the support and encouragement they can get."
The public are encouraged to submit their work to creative30.net. There will be no categories; submissions can range "from photography to writing or documentary films and everything in between."
A panel of judges will select 15 entries from these open submissions, completing the Creative 30. Three-minute documentaries for each of the candidates will be aired on creative30.net and the public will then be encouraged to vote for a winner. The jury will award one of the 30 a prize of £10,000, and the nominee with the most public votes will get a Volvo C30 R-DESIGN. Well, you can always sell it...
You can view a short film about my involvement in the Creative 30 competition above.
Congratulations to winners William Chambers & Katie Paterson.
